Minster vs Fort Loramie (Div. VII Regional Semi-Final at Sidney HS)
By: Tony Peters
Fort Loramie won their 2nd meeting with Minster Saturday night, and advanced to the Regional Finals with a 35-19 victory at Sidney’s Memorial Stadium. The Redskins and Wildcats traded scores in the 1st half before Loramie exploded in the 2nd half and never looked back.
Minster got the offense rolling on their first possession with a 29 yard TD run from QB Brogan Stephey (So) to take the early lead. Loramie countered on their ensuing possession with a 5 yard TD pass from Caleb Maurer (Sr) to Logan Eilerman (Sr) to tie the game back at 7-7.
The next score wouldn’t come until the 6:19 mark of the 2nd quarter when Maurer would score with his legs, scrambling and rushing for a 47 yard TD run to give the Redskins the lead back at 14-7. Both teams would trade until Minster regained possession with less than a minute in the quarter remaining. The Wildcats marched and scored with 6 seconds left on a Stephey 19 yard TD pass to Connor Schmiesing (So). A missed PAT however would give Fort Loramie a 14-13 lead going into the half.
The Redskins would pick things back up in the 2nd half and would shift the momentum on an opening possession 45 yard TD pass again from Maurer to Eilerman to give Loramie the 21-13 lead. The Redskins again scored at the 7:38 mark on Maurer’s 4 yard rush to left the lead 28-13. Minster countered this possession with a great drive, ending with Stephey scoring his 3rd TD of the game, this time on a 5 yard rush. A failed 2PT conversion kept the game 28-19 in favor of Fort Loramie.
The final quarter started with some trickery as the Redskins converted on a Fake WR Reverse throwback, which saw Will Holland (Jr) tossing an 11 yard TD pass to Maurer in the endzone to extend the lead and finalize the scoring at 35-19. The Redskins defense stepped up in the quarter forcing a fumble in their own territory, and picking off Stephey at the end of the game. The INT solidified the Redskins’ win and sends them to the Regional Finals to face New Bremen next week.

West Carrollton at Xenia
By: Tony Peters
Xenia put up big offensive numbers and set the school record for points in a game with a 64-20 victory Thursday night at Doug Adams Stadium. The Buccaneers put together 305 yards on the ground while their defense held the Pirates in check throughout the game.
Xenia exploded out the gate with TDs on their first 3 possessions. Gavin McManus (So) connected with Tremell Wright (Sr) for TD passes from 11 and 29 yards away. A 6 yard TD run from Trei’Shaun Sanders (Sr) would end the 1st quarter scoring as Xenia led 20-0.
The second quarter continued with an early TD, again from McManus to Wright for their 3rd TD connection of the night from 16 yards away. After another defensive stop, the Bucs would strike again as Sanders would pickup his 2nd TD of the night on a 41 yard run to extend the lead 34-0. A safety, Ramon Browder (Sr) 30 yard TD run, and Elijah Johnson (Jr) 22 yard TD run would give Xenia 50 points in the 1st half. West Carrollton’s final possession finally provided some hope as the Pirates marched down the field and converted on a 4th and 10 to score a 12 yard TD pass from Logan Cloyd (Sr) to Antonio Johnson (Jr) to make the score 50-6 at half with Xenia all but assured of a W.
Xenia would continue the offensive showing with another TD from Elijah Johnson on a short 6 yard run. West Carrollton would answer with a 75 yard TD pass from Cloyd to Robinson again and give Xenia a 57-12 lead after 3 quarters. Johnson would score his 3rd TD of the evening on another short 5 yard run and West Carrollton would end the scoring for the night on a 10 yard TD run for Dexter Pitts (Jr) to end the game with a Xenia 64-20 win.
Xenia had already clinched the Valley Division and move to 9-0 with the win. They will go on the road for the regular season finale at Sidney next Friday. West Carrollton drops to 0-9 with the loss and will head to Fairborn next week for their final game of the year.

Perrysburg at Anthony Wayne
By: Tony Peters
SWOFCP took our show on the road on Friday to see a NW Ohio matchup as Perrysburg visited NLL rival Anthony Wayne and stunned the previously undefeated Generals at a sold out Anthony Wayne HS to win 38-28 in Whitehouse.
The Yellow Jackets struck first on the opening possession of the game, getting a 21 yard TD pass from TJ Takats (Sr) to Connor Walendzak (Sr) to take the lead first 7-0. Anthony Wayne would counter with a TD of their own as fill-in QB Cadence Carswell (Jr) hit England Allen (Sr) for a 67 yard TD on their first possession to tie the game. The tie wouldn’t last long as Perrysburg would march down the field at the end of the quarter, capping it off with a 41 yard FG from AJ Bibb (Sr) to take the lead 10-7. Both teams traded turnover on downs in the 2nd quarter and would go into the locker room with Perrysburg up 10-7.
Anthony Wayne would start the 3rd quarter, but would make a crucial error as Carswell threw a ball on the run and was picked off by Matt McEwen (Sr) on the Generals’ side of the field. Perrysburg used the short field position and scored on Takats’ 13 yard TD run to extend the Perrysburg lead to 17-7. It took one play for Anthony Wayne to counter as the 1st possession after the TD, the Generals got a TD of their own from Joe Caswell (Sr) who exploded for a 66 yard TD run to cut the deficit back to 7. Perrysburg would again score as Takats ran in his 2nd TD on a 4 yard keeper to again extend the lead. On the very next play, Caswell struck again as he ran 74 yards down the sideline to again score for the Generals and end the scoring in the quarter. Perrysburg would lead 24-21.
The Yellow Jackets continued to churn clock and convert on 3rd and 4th down on the Generals. Walendzak would run in a 2 yard TD to make the lead 31-21. Anthony Wayne would punt and give Perrysburg the ball back, which Walendzak again capitalized on a 38 yard TD to make the lead 38-21. Joe Caswell would score once more for the Generals to make the final margin 38-28.
Anthony Wayne drops to 6-1 and will shift their attention on the road to Napoleon this Friday. Perrysburg also moves to 6-1 and will host Sylvania Northview Friday in another NLL showdown.

Belmont vs Thurgood Marshall at Welcome Stadium
By: Tony Peters
Belmont picked up their first DCL win with a comeback victory over Thurgood Marshall, 28-14 on Thursday night.
Due to a late arrival, I missed the first half of this matchup. Thurgood led at the half 6-0 and got their lone TD from Amare Lattimore (Jr) to take the lead in the 1st half.
The Cougars got the onside kick to start the 2nd half but turned the ball over on the Belmont 2-yard line. The ensuing Belmont possession ended in a safety as the Cougars extended their lead to 8-0. Another TD at the end of the quarter from Kasuan Graham (So), gave Thurgood a 14-0 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Belmont would finally answer with a 13 yard TD pass from Dy’lan Wilder (Jr) to Keiahilo Norvell (Sr). After the 2PT conversion the Bison deficit was 14-8. After forcing Thurgood to punt on their next possession, the Bison squared the game up at 14-14 when Victor Fleming (Sr) would run in a 7 yard TD. Another Thurgood fumble gave Belmont the football back with just under 3 minutes to play. Fleming would again score, this time on a 5 yard TD rush to give Belmont their first lead of the night, 22-14.
A late Thurgood surge offensively would be stopped by an INT from Chace Wells (Sr) that would be returned to the house to finalize the 28-14 victory for Belmont.
Belmont moves to 2-4 with the win and will continue DCL play with a game against Meadowdale next week. Thurgood Marshall drops to 0-7 and will host Fort Loramie next week.

CJ at Fenwick
By: Tony Peters
Fenwick opened up GCL Coed play with a win over league rival Chaminade-Julienne Friday night, as the Falcons defended home field on Homecoming 24-7.
Both teams were dependent on the run game for their respective offenses. C-J’s opening drive would make it to the redzone before a fumble gifted Fenwick possession. The Falcons wasted no time capitalizing on the turnover with a 63 yard TD run from Jude Hooks (Sr) to open the scoring 7-0. The Eagles answered on the very next possession, with Aiden Lowery (So) exploding down the middle of the field for an 85 yard TD run to tie the game back up at 7-7. The rate the game started, I expected a high scoring affair. However both teams adjusted defensively and kept each other scoreless the rest of the half. Bryce Pearce (Sr) would pickoff C-J at the end of the half to keep the score 7-7.
Fenwick started the 2nd half with a good opening drive, finishing with a Derek Morris (Jr) 38 yard FG to take the lead back 10-7. C-J would move the football but get picked off again by Pearce, giving the Falcons possession, and more time to milk the clock. The drive ended with a 4 yard TD rush from Connor Schmuelling (So) to extend the lead 17-7 through the third quarter.
Going into the fourth quarter, C-J would turn the ball over on downs on the Fenwick side of the field, but the Falcons quickly made up ground with a deep ball connection from Hooks to D.J. Brown (Sr), and then a 23 yard TD pass from Hooks to Jordan Vann (Fr) to end the scoring and give the Falcons a 24-7 win.
Jude Hooks led scoring with 2 TDs and 155 total yards of offense. Aiden Lowery impressed for the Eagles and had the one TD along with 122 yards on 9 attempts.
Fenwick moved to 5-1 with the victory and now shift their attention to a road game with McNicholas next week. C-J dropped to 3-3 and now are on a 2-game losing streak. They will look to rebound at home against Carroll next week.

Butler at Stebbins (played at Butler HS due to Power Outage)
By: Tony Peters
Butler won a low scoring MVL battle Thursday night, besting visiting Stebbins 10-7 at a chilly Memorial Field.
Both teams struggled on the offensive end of the field. Butler attacked with their ground game and some short passes. Stebbins got some momentum on a Rayvonn Harris (Jr) INT at the end of the quarter, but failed to get much moving on the offensive end as the Indians wee isolated by Butler’s front 7. The quarter ended with a 0-0 game.
Butler wouldn’t have much luck in the 2nd quarter having a turnover on downs, a punt, and another INT from Harris to keep scoreless. Stebbins would punt 2 of their 3 second quarter possessions with a fumble at the end of the half giving Butler the football back. Neither teams got much moving and the score stayed 0-0.
The third and fourth quarter continued down this same trend as both teams traded possessions. Stebbins would turn the ball over twice on fumbles with Butler taking over middle of the fourth quarter. The Aviators would finally strike first on a 35 yard TD pass from Luke Seibert (Jr) to Kaiden Bates (Jr) with about 8 ½ minutes remaining in the game to go up 7-0. Stebbins would march up the field and counter with a 15 yard TD pass from Adrian Norton (Sr) to Konnor Weaver (Jr) to tie the game back up 7-7, giving Butler the ball back with 5 minutes left to play.
Butler’s ensuing possession would result in a punt, but Stebbins would throw an INT on the possession that followed as Tyler Rosengarten (Sr) would grab his first pick of the year. The play set up Butler for a game winning FG for Devin Grewe (Sr), as the senior lined up and made a 23 yard FG to win this thriller and give the Aviators the W.
The win moved Butler to 3-3 on the season as the Aviators now look ahead to a matchup with state ranked Xenia back at Memorial Field on Friday. Stebbins dropped to 2-3 with the loss and will host Fairborn next week.

Northmont at Centerville
By: Tony Peters
Centerville continued their GWOC dominance with a 37-6 win over previously unbeaten Northmont Friday night at Centerville Stadium.
The Elks came out of the gates with a bang scoring on the first possession of the game on a 71 yard TD connection from Drake Wells (Jr)to Nic Bruder (Sr) to take the lead early on. Northmont would counter with a good opening drive, capitalized on a Deuce Cortner (Jr) 9 yard TD run, but the Bolts would miss the ensuing PAT. Springboro fought to the end but could not win the battle of the Panthers as they fell against visiting Elder 21-20 Friday night at CareFlight Field in Springboro.
Elder started the game off scoring on their first series with a power running game, finished off on a Luke Flowers (Sr) 1 yard TD run at the 9:49 mark. The touchdown put Elder up 7-0. Both teams would trade punts the rest of the quarter except Elder would turnover on downs at the end of the quarter giving Springboro possession at midfield.
Springboro would march deep into Elder territory only to face a 3rd and 17. The Elder defense brought pressure to Springboro QB Evan Ruzzo (Sr) forcing outside of the pocket and on the run. Ruzzo fired a lob to the end zone which was caught by Maxim Butler (Jr) for a 22 yard TD tying the game up after the PAT 7-7 with 10:52 to play in the 2nd quarter. The defensive struggle would continue between the two teams until Ruzzo again got another TD pass, this time to Cade Lamb (Sr) for a 23 yard TD which gave Springboro a 14-7 lead going into the locker room.
Springboro would get possession to start the 2nd half and started off with a bang; running a sweep to Willizhaun Yates (Jr) on the first play from scrimmage and Yates sprinted down the Elder sideline for a 80 yard TD run. Boro would miss the PAT and extend the lead 20-7. Elder would respond on the ensuing possession with a long drive down the field capped off by another Flowers TD run from 8 yards away to cut the deficit to 20-14 with 8:26 to play in the 3rd. Springboro failed to answer as Elder utilized their large front 7 to keep Ruzzo in check much of the quarter. Elder would get another TD near the end of the quarter on a Ben Schoster (Sr) keeper from 9 yards out to retake the lead 21-20.
The 4th quarter would bring even more craziness as Springboro retook possession after the go-ahead TD for Elder and marched down the field into the red zone. The possession took about half the quarter but failed to bring any scoring as Springboro missed a 23 yard FG that would have taken the lead. Both teams would trade possession through punts until a pivotal moment at the 1:24 mark of the 4th quarter.
Elder faced a 3rd and 7 from Springboro’s 40-yard line which they failed to convert and forced Springboro to burn their final timeout. On 4th and 1, the Springboro defense stepped up and got a stop, giving them possession back on their own 34-yard line with 1:06 to play and no timeouts. The Elder defense did their job and held the Boro offense until a pass interference call with 12 seconds left lined up Springboro a final shot to win on a Hail Mary heave. Ruzzo was able to fire a ball to the end zone as time expired with Elder knocking the ball down and thus surviving on the road.
Top Performers
Evan Ruzzo (Sr) Springboro 5’10 QB- Ruzzo found 2 TDs in the air for the Panthers while taking 20 attempts on the ground for 59 yards. It was clear the Elder defense did their homework and kept Ruzzo from getting much green to run to. Even then, Ruzzo performed well in the read option and most importantly made plays for the Panthers, including the 22 yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter on the run. His dependence to scramble can be an issue but with receivers like Maxim Butler and Cade Lamb on the perimeter, he’s got guys he can move the football with.
Willizhaun Yates (Jr) Springboro 6’1 RB- The former Trotwood-Madison standout transferred over for the Panthers and exploded for 134 yards on 9 carries and a TD that shifted the momentum to start the 2nd half in Springboro’s loss. Yates has a scrawnier frame but his explosiveness off the LOS and shiftiness with his jukes allowed him to pick up yardage and keep the football moving. I think his upside is there especially if he can continue to break out these long 15-20+ yard runs to keep drives alive.
The loss drops Springboro to 2-1 as the Panthers look to rebound next week in their GWOC opener against Beavercreek at home. Elder moves to 3-0 with the win and shifts their attention to a key road game against Lakewood St. Edward on Friday.

Oakwood at Milton-Union
By: Tony Peters
Milton-Union put on an offensive showcase Thursday night with a 45-13 non-conference win at Memorial Stadium against visiting Oakwood. The Bulldogs scored on 7 of their 9 offensive possessions and impressed throughout the game.
The excitement started early as Oakwood punted on their first possession which Blake Brumbaugh (Sr) returned to the endzone, but an illegal block in the back penalty negated the TD and gave Milton-Union possession on their side of the field. Brumbaugh would find the end zone still on a 26 yard TD run in which he weaved through the Lumberjacks defense to score. Oakwood would respond on the ensuing drive, converting on a 4th and 13 with 31 seconds left in the quarter to score a 32 yard TD from Stephen Lauterbach (Jr) to Max Parker (Sr). The Jacks PAT would be blocked and Milton-Union would lead 7-6 after the 1st quarter.
The Bulldogs would again score on the ground with Brumbaugh picking up his 2nd rushing TD of the game from 9 yards away, giving Milton-Union a 14-6 lead with 8:22 to go in the 2nd quarter. Oakwood would respond with a big 67 yard TD for Max Parker on a double move over the middle of the field. The Jacks would convert this PAT to make the score 14-13, but this would be the last offense we would see from Oakwood. Milton-Union would punch in two more scores in the last 4 minutes of the quarter on a 2 yard TD run from Michael Elam (Sr) and a 6 yard TD pass from Nate Morter (Sr) to Brumbaugh. The Bulldogs went into halftime up 28-13.
The 2nd half would continue the dominant offensive performance as Milton-Union would take their first 2nd half possession down the field and score on a 20 yard TD pass to Connor Yates (Sr) to extend the lead 35-13. Oakwood would turn the ball over on downs which allowed Milton-Union another possession near the end of the quarter. The Bulldogs capitalized with a 47 yard TD pass from Morter to Brumbaugh again. Milton-Union would lead 42-13 at the end of the quarter.
The 4th quarter was much quieter with Oakwood being forced to punt on their possession and Milton-Union again using their run offense to bleed clock and move the ball. The Bulldogs would score one final time on a 30 yard FG from Mason Grudich (Sr) which would ultimately end the game 45-13.
Top Performers
Blake Brumbaugh (Sr) Milton-Union 6’1 WR/DB- Brumbaugh had a career day going for 4 total TDs in the win. It was apparent as the game wore on that Brumbaugh was the most athletic player on the field and Oakwood did not have an answer for this. Brumbaugh was so difficult to wrap up and beat tacklers in the open field. His presence in the secondary forced Oakwood to settle for short yardage pass plays and their run offense. Brumbaugh has the potential to be an All-State caliber player and is part of a loaded Bulldog offense that should compete in the TRC.
Michael Elam (Sr) Milton-Union 5’10 RB- Elam was the focal point of the Bulldogs running game, getting plenty of touches and pacing their run game. What I liked most about him was the toughness he had and his YAC as he seemingly picked up 3-5 extra yards on average after the first contact defensively. Hit the gaps hard and churned positive yardage whenever he got a touch. Should continue to be a focal point in the offense.
Stephen Lauterbach (Jr) Oakwood 5’10 QB- Thursday would be arguably Lauterbach’s best performance statistically thus far with a 2 TD and no turnover performance. I felt his decision making was on point and Lauterbach didn’t try to force passes that weren’t there. Served as the Jacks primary running threat although he didn’t get much going on the offensive end there. Lauterbach lacks many other options offensively which forces him to do more with his feet. As the Jacks continue onwards, I have concerns with what defenses may throw at him to contain.
Milton-Union moves to 3-0 with the win and will open TRC play against Lehman Catholic next Friday at Memorial Stadium. Oakwood drops to 1-2 and will look to rebound on the road again at Valley View next week.

Preble Shawnee at Tri-Village
By: Tony Peters
Preble Shawnee survived Friday night on the road at Clayton Murphy Track & Field. The Arrows came back from a 2nd half deficit to earn a statement WOAC win over Tri-Village 26-21.
THe scoring didn’t get started until halfway through the 1st quarter after Preble Shawnee recovered a muffed punt. The Arrows would cap off the drive with a 30 yard TD pass from Malechai Stephenson (Sr) to Dylan Zornes (Sr) on an end-around flea flicker. A failed 2PT conversion left it 6-0. Tri-Village would respond with a long drive to end the quarter, getting a TD as the clock hit zero on a lob to Justin Finkbine (Sr) from 30 yards out. After the PAT, Tri-Village led 7-6 which ended the quarter.
Another muffed punt at the beginning of the 2nd quarter by Tri-Village gave Preble Shawnee possession and with the short field, they got a 5 yard TD run from Brayden Doran (Sr). A successful 2PT conversion made the score 14-7 Arrows. Tri-Village would respond with a good possession with Reed Wehr (Jr) ultimately finding the endzone from 13 yards away to tie the game at 14-14. The Arrows and Patriots would trade INTs and end the half tied at 14.
The 3rd quarter started with a Preble Shawnee turnover on downs which allowed Tri-Village to work some clock and get a TD pass to Tanner Printz (Jr) from Braden Keating (Jr) from 20 yards away. After the kick, Tri-Village led 21-14 halfway through the quarter. Preble Shawnee responded with another TD from Doran, this time from 4 yards out, but another failed 2PT conversion kept the score 21-20 Tri-Village. The turning point of this game came on the ensuing series as Tri-Village was able to move the ball getting to the Preble Shawnee 1-yard line. However, the Patriots failed to score and instead fumbled to the Arrows ending the quarter 21-20 slightly leading still.
Preble Shawnee marched over 90 yards in about 6 minutes to retake the lead 26-21 after Dorn again ran in another TD from 6 yards away. The failed 2PT conversion kept hope for the Patriots to try and win. The ensuing possession ended with Tri-Village turning the ball over on downs and giving Preble the ball back with 5:56 left to play. Tri-Village’s defense did their part getting a stop and forcing the Arrows to punt giving the ball back to the Patriots with 2:39 to play. Tri-Village converted on a 4th and long to keep the drive going, but ultimately failed to get into the redzone and threw an INT on 4th down to end the game as Preble Shawnee took a knee to end regulation.
Top Performers
Brayden Doran (Sr) QB Preble Shawnee- Doran was the spark of the offense for the Arrows after not playing last week against Miami East. The senior QB had 3 rushing TDs and 1 INT in the win, but impressed with his quickness out of the option and on keepers. Working behind a solid offensive line allowed Doran to convert on some key 3rd down possessions and allowed him 3 redzone TDs. Doran has plenty of upside, but it is concerning that the Arrows used him as much as they did, questioning their depth with the run game.
Reed Wehr (Jr) 5’10 RB Tri-Village- Wehr only found the endzone one time in the loss, but had several long runs to keep drives alive. Caught the ball well out of the backfield and served as a good option in the flat for the Patriots. While he impressed offensively, I was concerned that Wehr muffed at least one of the two failed punt retunrs for the Patriots. He certainly can handle the workload given already and could see some massive improvements between this season and next for the Patriots.
Noah Finkbine (Fr) 5’11 DB Tri-Village- It’s not often you see a freshman making impacts on the game on the football field, but it seemed every possession you heard Finkbine either solo tackling or assisting in tackling defenders. Closed in on receivers quickly and hit hard and efficiently. Has a ton of upside and is going to be a problem the next 4 years for opponents.
The win moves Preble Shawnee to 1-1 as they will now focus on their game next week at home against National Trail. Tri-Village drops to 1-1 with the loss and will look to bounce back at home against Twin Valley South next week .

Eaton at Springfield Shawnee
By: Tony Peters
Springfield Shawnee fought for their first win Thursday night at Dave Long Memorial Stadium with a convincing 34-12 win against visiting Eaton. The Braves showed better execution on the offensive end after being held to 7 points last week against Valley View. Eaton saw their offense and defense both struggle on the road as they were a different looking team Thursday night than their opening win against Greenville.
Shawnee came out right off the bat on the first possession with a good drive finished off by a 25 yard TD pass from RJ Griffin (Sr) to Ed Boehmer (Jr) to take a 7-0 lead early. The opening drive for Eaton was quick as the Eagles’ Brock Ebright (Sr) threw his first INT of the game on the second play from scrimmage. The scoring would go on hold with a Shawnee turnover on downs and Eaton punt, before Shawnee regained and struck again at the end of the quarter with a 48 yard TD run from Griffin. A 2PT conversion attempt failed giving Shawnee a 13-0 lead at the end of the quarter.
Eaton found some rhythm offensively on their third possession moving the ball into Shawnee territory before Ebright threw his 2nd INT of the game, this time by Trint Cordle (Jr) who returned it 77 yards for a TD, giving Shawnee a 20-0 lead. Eaton’s following possession started off similar to the previous one with the Eagles moving the ball better and eventually getting into Shawnee territory again. This time however, Eaton was able to finish the drive with a 10 yard TD by Leslie Orr (Jr) from Ebright on a pivotal 4th and goal. The PAT was good, keeping the score at 20-6 where it would stay until halftime.
The action didn’t stop in the 2nd half as Shawnee attempted an onside kick to start the half off and recovered. Unable to capitalize however, Shawnee and Eaton would trade punts before the Braves would get on the board yet again from RJ Griffin who would run in a 25 yard TD to extend the lead 27-6 and end the quarter.
The 4th quarter continued to be a struggle for Eaton as the offensive line couldn’t protect up front and forced Ebright to do a lot with his legs. Shawnee would end up with the ball back early in the quarter which ended with an RJ Griffin TD pass from 32 yard outs to Caden Craig-White (So) to build on the lead and make it 34-6. The quarter would continue on before Eaton found the endzone again thanks to Ebright and his versatility as the senior found Ian Ruebush (Jr) for a 22 yard TD. A failed 2PT conversion kept the score at 34-12 where we ultimately end things.
Top Performers
RJ Griffin (Sr) QB- It goes without saying Griffin was the most impressive player in the game with a total of 4 TDs in the win. The senior had crisp passes, connecting on several bubble screens and short yardage connections and showed good placement for his receivers. Obviously impressed with his legs too getting 2 of his 4 TDs from the ground. Head fakes and body control on the read option faked out the Eaton defense several times and allowed some good outside runs for the Braves.
Brock Ebright (Sr) QB 5’10- Ebright wasn’t able to replicate the success against Greenville, but still put together a decent stat line with 2 TDs and 2 INTs in the loss. What impressed me most was Ebright’s versatility and playmaking outside the pocket. The combination of Eaton’s offensive line struggling and Shawnee amping up the pressure in the 2nd half forced Ebright to scramble nearly every possession in the 2nd half. When he got in the open field, Ebright’s speed allowed him to get extra yards and create some wild throws. Even on the run, his arm strength and ball placement were quite impressive to watch.
Brady Bumgardner (Jr) LB 6’0- Bumgardner impressed as he anchored a Braves defense that held Eaton well under their previous scoring numbers a week ago. At 6’0, I felt Bumgardner had good size and had the footwork to defend receivers in the flat. His INT in the 1st quarter was a testament to his long arms and quick wits. Led the Braves in tackles a week ago and showed technique and consistency wrapping guys up Thursday night.
Shawnee will again play host next week as they begin CBC play against Graham. Eaton will have one more game before SWBL play begins with a home matchup with Talawanda.

Week One Huddle Up
1. Fairmont wins the Battle of Kettering in convincing fashion
Fairmont kicked off the 2022 campaign with a 31-7 victory against crosstown rival Alter in Kettering Thursday night. The Firebirds held Alter under 200 yards of total offense and was paced offensively by Drew Baker. The senior went for 205 yards rushing and 2 TDs.
2. Ruzzo paces Springboro to an opening night win
Senior QB Evan Ruzzo had a great start for the Panthers tossing 3 TDs against Lebanon along with 214 yards in the air. He also paced the Panthers running game with 84 yards on the ground.
3. Carroll hangs on to beat Ponitz
The Patriots erased two 9 point deficits to beat Ponitz 25-19 on Thursday night. A 41 yard TD pass from Ryan Chapman (Sr) to Luke Herrmann (Sr) gave Carroll their first lead of the night and came at the right time late in the 4th quarter. The Patriots defense came up big getting 3 turnovers on Ponitz, including two interceptions in the win.
4. Bellefontaine goes on road and beats and MVL team
The Chieftains went on the road and dominated against Sidney, winning in convincing fashion 43-13. The win was a balanced effort with the defense holding Sidney to 180 yards of total offense and getting 3 interceptions on the Yellow Jackets. Tavien St. Clair (So) threw 3 TDs to pace the offense. The win is huge for Bellefontaine who might be one of the best middle division programs in the area.
5. Waynesville defeats the defending state champs
The Spartans pulled off likely the biggest upset of the first weekend defeating powerhouse Clinton-Massie 14-7. Waynesville had a rough showing on the offensive end but got the go-ahead TD on a fumble recovery by Connor Berrey (Jr) in the 3rd quarter which would prove to be the game winning play. The Spartans defense held it together even after allowing Clinton-Massie 19 first downs and over 300 yards on the ground in the loss.
6. Preble Shawnee has a big night against Miami East
The Arrows led 42-0 at the half and never looked back as they defeated Miami East 61-7 in a non-conference win. Brady Morton (Fr) debuted for the Arrows and had 3 TD passes and over 200 yards in the air during the win while Grady Hutchinson (Sr) scored 2 TDs and accounted for 81 yards on the ground. The Arrows have yet to lose in the WOAC after an undefeated conference record last season. They should again be a force in Division V as well as the WOAC.

Xenia at Beavercreek
By: Tony Peters
Xenia started the season off on a strong note with a 40-3 non-conference win on the road against Beavercreek Friday night.
The Buccaneers started the game off on a fast note with Trei’Shaun Sanders (Sr) breaking free for an 84 yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage. Beavercreek responded by fumbling on their first possession giving Xenia possession back on Beavercreek’s side of the field. The Buccaneers capitalized with a 5 yard TD run from Sanders again to extend the lead to two possessions. Beavercreek would turn around and punt on the next possession giving Xenia good field position again. The Bucs capitalized with a 31 yard TD pass from Gavin McManus (So) to Tremell Wright (Sr) to take a 21-0 lead into the end of the quarter.
The 2nd quarter proved to be a back-and-forth exchange between both teams trading turnover on downs and punts before Xenia again got another short yardage TD run, this time from Ramon Browder (Sr) from 7 yards out. A missed PAT would keep the score at 27-0 which is where we would go into the half.
Beavercreek would start the 2nd half with better pace both running the ball and short yardage pass game to milk quite a bit of clock. The Beavers moved the ball well until they turned the ball over on an interception halfway through the quarter. Xenia capitalized on the turnover with a 22 yard TD run from Trei’Shaun Sanders, his 3rd TD of the evening. Another missed PAT kept the game at 33-0 ending the quarter.
Beavercreek’s first possession in the 4th quarter resulted in a FG from Shaun Morse (Sr) finally getting the Beavers on the board 33-3. Xenia would score one last time, on a 4 yard TD run from Elijah Johnson (Jr) which would end the scoring 40-3.
Top Performers
Trei’Shaun Sanders 6’0 RB- Sanders had a great start to the season capping in 3 TDs in Xenia’s win. The senior RB ran the ball well behind his OL and made some great runs in open space, getting through contact. After having 4 TDs all last year, Sanders is already on his way to a better senior campaign for the Buccaneers.
Jamell Smith 6’1 DL- SMith was involved a lot on the line for Xenia and played a large role in shutting down Beavercreek’s running game in the game. Smith is quick off the line and showed versatility getting around linemen. Had several TFLs and was impactful behind the line of scrimmage.
Tremell Wright 5’11 WR/DB- Wright made plays on both ends of the field, picking up several receptions including a TD in the 2nd quarter for Xenia. The senior wideout seemed to be Xenia’s favorite target on the offensive end and excelled both in short yardage and long yardage plays.
Xenia will go on the road for an MVL matchup with Troy next week while Beavercreek will look to rebound on the road at Franklin.

Alter at Fairmont
By: Tony Peters
Fairmont started the 2022 football season off strong with a 31-7 victory over crosstown rival Alter at Roush Stadium in Kettering Thursday evening.
Alter started the game out with a 3-and-out and handed Fairmont the ball early in the 1st quarter. Fairmont marched down the field using their senior RB Drew Baker as much as possible on the drive. The Firebirds would run out the quarter ending at the Alter 1-yard line before the quarter ended.
The best way to sum up the 2nd quarter was turnover ridden. On the first play of the quarter, Fairmont fumbled at the goal line giving Alter the football back deep in their own territory. On the very next play, the Knights threw an INT handing Fairmont the ball back around midfield. The Firebirds began marching before they turned the ball over for the 2nd time on another fumble. Alter regained possession and in turn fumbled on the drive giving Fairmont the football back. The turnover battle would go back and forth before Alter finally had a FG attempt near the end of the quarter. Fairmont was able to block the kick and scoop-and-score for a 80 yard touchdown return. The would end the half with the Firebirds up 7-0.
Fairmont received the ball to start the 2nd half and used their run-heavy offense to run down the clock; capitalizing on a 43 yard FG from senior Will Holt. Alter would get the ball back and move down the field, ultimately ending with a missed FG attempt for themselves. On the next play, Fairmont capitalized with a 80 yard TD run from Baker to put them up 17-0 going into the 4th quarter.
In the 4th, Alter again was plagued with turnovers as the Knights fumbled the ball for their 4th turnover of the game. Fairmont capitalized with a strong drive capped off by another Baker TD run, this time from the 4-yard line. This TD gave Fairmont a 24-0 lead. Alter finally got on the board with a nice drive ending in junior Carter Sheets scoring on a 29 yard TD. Just as we thought the fireworks were over, Fairmont again capitalized on their run game getting sophomore Brock Baker in the scoring column on a 42 yard TD run to end the game.
Top Performers
Dalton Gustwiller 6’5 280 lbs DL- Gustwiller used his massive frame to create problems in the trenches for Alter. Facing a smaller OL, Gustwiller was shedding blocks early on and was able to get involved in stopping Alter’s run game from the beginning. By 2nd half, Alter was running away from him to get more yardage. A returning All-State player, Gustwiller has a ton of upside and should be heavily depended on in the Firebirds defense.
Drew Baker 5’11 RB- It should come as no surprise Baker makes this list after a 2 TD performance against the Knights. Baker impressed me with his drive and the way he powered through tacklers. Showed a strong upper body getting through contact and broke out for a few long runs for the Firebirds. Baker was without a doubt Fairmont’s key offensive weapon and could see similar stats to last season’s 1,500+ yard year.
Carter Sheets 6’4 WR- Sheets put the Knights on the board in the 4th quarter on a nice 29 yard TD reception which ultimately proved to be Alter’s only source of offense on the night. At 6’4, Sheets had a size advantage on the smaller Fairmont secondary and came away with at least 6 receptions in the loss. Showed great hands and body control, keeping the ball tight after catches. He could see increased workload if Alter struggles continuously on the run game.
Fairmont will head to Trotwood-Madison next week while Alter will travel to Welcome Stadium for a matchup with Thurgood Marshall.
